Celeb DUI Tidbits for July 14, 2010

We found some more juice in the Mary Richardson Kennedy DUI story. We all heard the rumors that her marriage to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was failing and apparently the couple filed for divorce three days before Mary Richardson Kennedy was arrested. Additionally, documents show police were called for a domestic incident in which the Mrs. was accused of being drunk. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was not present for Mary’s arraignment, in which she pleaded guilty (yeesh) and will undergo an evaluation to see if she does fit the Kennedy stereotype.

Poor little Lindsay Lohan has hit the tabloids again with a leaked song that seems to reflect her recent DUI troubles. I know this is a bit harsh, but a part of me believes she wrote this song while on some mind-altering substance. The lyrics are pretty laughable. Take a listen before it gets taken down.

DUI Tidbits for July 13, 2010

We have another story with the moral of “watch what you put up on Facebook”. We have heard of people getting fired from scandalous pictures on Facebook or creditors tracking people down through the social networking site. Now, Facebook photos can influence a person’s conviction. Jasob Isbell, of South Carolina, pleaded guilty to a DUI for a crash that killed his passenger. Isbell’s plea came after his victim’s parents saw pictures of him on Facebook continuing to drink. Perhaps the court should friend DUI offenders on Facebook. It may be an effective way to monitor their drinking…

Can’t wait in line at the liquor store? No worries. Pennsylvania has installed wine vending machines, which require you to have your picture taken and blow into a breath sensor. I thought boxed wine was classy, but I guess I got out-classed.

Fox News offers an analysis of the midst of an onslaught of recent celebrity DUIs. If you are feeling sympathetic about how hard celebrities have it, it’s a good read.

However, don’t feel sympathetic for LeBron James. Apparently it was LeBron’s fault that this guy got a DUI.

Finally, this one is for the baseball fans out there. Joe the Cop has a gallery of MLB All-stars’ mugshots for you to peruse. Maybe you can make trading cards out of them…

A National DUI Database?

Would you want information about your DUI arrest to be available in a nationwide database? This is what Omaha City Prosecutor, Marty Conboy wants to see within the next year.

Conboy is heading an effort to create a database that consolidates all DUI arrests in all 50 states into one database. This system would be put into use to better prosecute repeat DUI offenders whose previous convictions were in another state. Many times, previous DUI convictions in different states go unnoticed when a person is currently being charged. There are many instances where a repeat offender is convicted of a misdemeanor, when, according to a specific state’s law, they should be convicted of a felony.

This does seem to be an effective way to crack down on repeat offenders. However, does this seem like a breach of privacy? How do you think this will affect a one-time offender who wants to put their DUI arrest behind them?

George Michael Arrested

On Sunday, pop singer George Michael was arrested on suspicion for being “unfit” to drive. He crashed his car in London’s Hampstead area in the early morning and has been released on bail.

This is not the first of Michael’s traffic offenses. In fact, he actually has quite a bit. For a complete timeline, MTV.com has a comprehensive list of Michael’s violations. It will make you question how George Michael is able to get behind the wheel again and again.

What We Can Learn from Lindsay

It was the DUI sentence heard around the world. Whether it qualifies as “news” or not, Lindsay Lohan has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and a subsequent 90 days in rehab for her 2007 DUI arrest. Based on all the tabloid articles that have basically been spoon fed to us, here are some things we can take away from the fallen starlet’s DUI issues.

Do not miss your court dates. Not only is it rude, it will affect the outcome of your case. Irritating a judge is the worst thing you can do, so do not be lazy when it comes to showing up in court.

Understand that DUI laws are harsh. If you violate your probation and do not do what the judge orders you to do, you will face a greater punishment. This goes without saying, but surprisingly, a large number of people in this country seem to think that not complying with court orders is okay.

Do not be a childstar. I have a feeling that legal trouble is an epidemic for grownup childstars. However, this is just a theory…

Now, can we please put Lindsay behind us and move on with our lives? Just kidding. The truth is I cannot wait to see what she is wearing as she walks into jail.

Important Factors in Finding the Right Lawyer

Dealing with a DUI arrest will probably be one of the most chaotic experiences you will ever encounter. The stress is insurmountable and it feels as if you will never stop worrying about what is going to happen to you.

Because of this, we cannot stress enough how important it is to hire a qualified DUI attorney. We come across a lot of questions about what makes DUI lawyer qualified. Therefore, we have provided a few pointers that usually indicate that a lawyer is qualified to take on your case. Finding a qualified lawyer is very important to your defense, so please take note.

Is your lawyer experienced? You want a lawyer who has handled DUI cases before. Your life is too important to be a test subject for an inexperienced lawyer.

Is your lawyer a member of professional organizations? When a DUI attorney is a member of associations such as The National College of DUI defense or state DUI lawyers’ associations, it shows that they are dedicated to their work in defending DUI accusations.

Has your lawyer had any type of specialized training? Lawyers who have completed advanced training in field sobriety testing as well as breath and blood testing protocols are necessary to your defense. They are ultimately more knowledgeable, which can only help you in the end.

What is your lawyer’s success rate? If your lawyer has never won a case, this may be a sign that this isn’t the most qualified lawyer you should hire.

Does your lawyer lecture to peers? If your lawyer teaches workshops to other lawyers, this is a good sign that this attorney has experience in this field and is well respected in the community.

Does your lawyer return your calls or emails? If your lawyer is not being accessible, this is a good sign that he or she is not right for you. Effective communication is essential for a successful law practice. Attorneys who are not considerate to be there when you need them are not worth your time.

A lot of people feel like when they’ve made a mistake they don’t deserve the best. This is not the case with a DUI. It is essential to get the best lawyer possible, so you can continue to live your life.

DUI Tidbits for July 2nd, 2010

Here’s some interesting (to say the least) DUI news for you. Maybe these individuals’  mistakes can persuade you to be safe this holiday weekend.

Scandal!… Last weekend Damon Evans, the Georgia Athletic Director, was arrested for a DUI. Now, sources are saying he was with a 28-year old female passenger… who was not his wife… or daughter.

Did you know?… Apparently, you can get a little buzz off of vanilla extract. A Tennessee woman was busted for a DUI and officers found a bunch of empty vanilla extract bottles in her car. Vanilla extract has 35 % alcohol by volume. Maybe that’s why grandma spent a lot of time in the kitchen…

Talk about a terrible night… I think I might have seen this in a Judd Apatow movie. Apparently, two buddies attended their 20th high school reunion and got plastered. One of them proceeded to urinate in the sink of the bathroom and got arrested. His friend tried to bail him out of jail, but got a DUI on the way to the police station. Yikes. Did I mention they were at their 20th high school reunion? I guarantee these two were voted “Most Likely to Succeed.”
